Badass scientists

Always do thier research in a large dark room, while wearing leather and olive-toned clothing. Or so it seems, according to Alias.

(Incidentally, I’ve received both seasons on DVD for Hanukkah and I’m enjoying rewatching all the episodes. I really think the writing and plotlines are creative.)

The Big Bad Internet?

January 2, 2004

Happy New Year! The second day of the year brought some un-fun stuff, though. While checking my credit card statement, I noticed some charges I definitely didn’t make. I immediately called the CC company (AMEX), was put in touch with the fraud department, and they will investigate and not hold me responsible for the charges. Whoever it was, managed to charge $444.95 to my account.

First, they made a transaction on Paypal for $245, then tried another one for $1200, which was thankfully creditted back the next day (AMEX thinks Paypal may have figured that out). Then, they signed up for an internet account with an ISP ($9.95). Then two purchases to Network Solutions for domain names for $165 and $25. Definitely some hacker on the internet is (hopefully, was) using my credit card to conduct nefarious activities!

I don’t know how anyone would have gotten my CC info, as I’m moderately paranoid and safe on the internet. Especially being an internet developer, I read a lot and probably know most of the tricks used (and try to prevent them when I write my apps). It could just as easily be someone lifting the number at a restaurant or somewhere else.

Very disheartening, but hopefully they’ll catch whoever it is! At least AMEX is being good about it so far, and will get me a new card tomorrow.

Just remember, kids… Be safe and wear protection!
